What is a congenital outpouching located in the ileum?

A congenital outpouching located in the ileum is known as a Meckel's diverticulum. It is a common anomaly that results from incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct, which connects the developing fetus to the yolk sac during embryonic development. Meckel's diverticulum typically arises from the antimesenteric border of the ileum, about 2 feet from the ileocecal valve. Although usually asymptomatic, it can occasionally cause complications such as abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, bleeding, or inflammation. Treatment may be required if complications occur, which can involve surgical removal of the diverticulum.
