Under Eye Discoloration From a Fat Injection

Injections are becoming a popular cosmetic surgery to smooth wrinkles in the skin. While there are many benefits, there are some risks. One of these risks is that the skin around the injection points may become discolored.
  1. Soft Tissue Filler

    • Collagen, hyaluronic acid (Restylane) and fat injections are all soft tissue fillers. A soft tissue filler is injected into the skin where it wrinkles. The skin is filled out by the injection and the wrinkle disappears. The effects last from three to six months.

    Injections Under the Eye

    • Fat injections, as with other soft tissue fillers, can be made under the eye to reduce signs of aging in the skin. The procedure can also be used to try to get rid of the appearance of dark circles under the eye.

    Side Effects

    • There are a number of side effects that may be caused by fat injections and other soft tissue fillers. Among these are redness and soreness at the site of the injection. Discoloration of the skin at the injection site may also occur, even in injections intended to reduce the appearance of dark circles around the eyes.

    Duration

    • All side effects of soft tissue filler injections should only last up to seven days, and should fade on their own. This includes discoloration under the skin.

    Warning

    • If discoloration lasts for more than seven days, it may be indicative of a larger problem, or a bad reaction to the injection. If the discoloration lasts for more than seven days or is extremely painful, you should let your surgeon know and she will determine if any action needs to be taken.
