Procedures Available for Eye Wrinkles

Aging skin is a fact of life and the condition of a person's skin is largely determined by genetics and lifestyle choices. One of the first places to show signs of aging are the eyes. Fine lines, crow's feet, frown lines and lower eye bags can age a person beyond his or her years. Luckily, certain procedures can reduce or eliminate eye wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
  1. Non-Invasive Procedures

    • Consult with a dermatologist about skin resurfacing to reduce eye wrinkles. Chemical peels and dermabrasion improve the look of the skin by removing the outer layer of skin with a chemical solution or tiny crystal particles. Both procedures promote skin cell regeneration, revealing healthier smoother skin. Laser resurfacing is a newer option for skin resurfacing that targets specific areas with high intensity light. Skin resurfacing treats superficial lines and wrinkles, but does stop new wrinkles from forming.

    Injections and Fillers

    • Ask your doctor about injections or fillers made specifically to plump up thinning wrinkled skin or relax underlying muscles. Botulinum toxins, also known as Botox, can be injected under the surface of the skin to effectively paralyze the area and diminish eye wrinkles. Collagen injections are another popular choice for reducing wrinkles. Collagen is a natural-occurring protein that fills out an area, resulting in smoother skin. The results for either procedure last anywhere from three to nine months and additional injections may be elected to maintain the look.

    Surgical Options

    • Look into surgical options to reduce or remove eye wrinkles. Brow lifts can improve the look of frown lines between the eyes and help lift sagging eyebrows. With a brow lift, incisions are usually made at or behind the hairline and the skin is pulled up and extra skin may be removed before the incisions are stitched. For deep wrinkles between the eyes, the muscles may be restructured for smoother results. A lower lid bletharoplasty can reduce bags under the eyes and make the eyes appear younger. The procedure involves making small cuts under the eyelids to remove fatty deposits and tighten the skin.

    Considerations

    • Protect your skin to prevent premature wrinkles. There is no procedure will stop the aging process or completely prevent new wrinkles from forming. But, protecting the skin increases the odds of maintaining younger looking skin. The sun is the biggest culprit when it comes to skin damage and sunscreen should be a part of everyone's daily skin care regime. Avoid stress as frowning and scowling contribute to permanent eye wrinkles. Quitting smoking is not only better for overall health; smoking has been linked to premature aging and wrinkles.

    Warnings

    • Educate yourself on the various eye wrinkle procedures available before deciding on a treatment. Consult with a doctor or dermatologist to discuss options, risks, costs and results to evaluate which procedures will benefit you the most.
