About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the technical term for a nose job. When you consult a surgeon to perform a rhinoplasty, you will be asked for a complete medical history, you will have an exam and the doctor will make sure that you understand the entire procedure. Some surgeons will give you an example of what you will look like after the surgery.
  1. Benefits

    • Rhinoplasty can reshape the nose, alter the shape of the tip of the nose or straighten the bridge. This procedure is often used for correcting birth defects, injuries and breathing troubles.

    Choosing a Surgeon

    • When you choose a cosmetic surgeon for your rhinoplasty, there are some special things to consider since the surgery deals with your nasal passages and facial appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, your surgeon should have at least six years experience, be a member of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, follow ethical standards and be willing and able to answer questions.

    Considerations

    • After having rhinoplasty, you will have to limit your activity level for three to four weeks. This includes bypassing aerobics and other strenuous exercise, lifting over 20 pounds and swimming.

    After the Surgery

    • For two to three weeks after the surgery, you may have some swelling around your nose and bruising around your eyes. According to the Mayo Clinic, you may not see the full effects of your rhinoplasty for a year after the surgery was done.

    Risks

    • Rhinoplasty is considered major surgery because you will be put to sleep with intravenous anesthesia for the process. The risks of this surgery include anesthesia complications, bleeding troubles, infection and, in severe cases, death.
