Rotator Cuff Exercises After Surgery
Following rotator cuff surgery, exercises are necessary to strengthen the muscles and regain flexibility. Below are some of the exercises the surgeon or physical therapist may recommend that can be performed using an exercise band or surgical tubing. (See Resources below for complete instructions for all exercises listed.)-
Pendulum Swing
-
Using a table or chair for support, bend forward allowing the arm to hang loosely. First, swing the arm back and forth (pendulum style). Then, swing the arm in circles.
Wall Push-Ups
-
With your hands resting on a wall at shoulder level, lean forward while bending your elbows until your face touches the wall. Push back and repeat.
Internal Rotator Strengthening
-
With your arm bent at the elbow and held against the side of your body, using an exercise band tied to a doorknob, rotate your arm toward your body until it touches it.
External Rotator Strengthening
-
Holding an exercise band tied to a doorknob, with your forearm leaning against your stomach, rotate your arm away from your body.
Wall Climbing from Side and Front
-
Alternating between the side and front of your body facing a wall, with your arm and hand outstretched and your fingers touching it, begin walking your fingers up the wall as high possible.
