How to Use Eakin Seals

Eakin Cohesive Seals (ECS) are adhesive skin barriers that protect the epidermis surrounding a surgical stoma. The seal provides a layer between the effluent pouch and the skin for ileostomy, colostomy and urostomy conditions. ECS help to prevent pouch leakages by creating a waterproof barrier around the stoma site. Dermatological problems associated with stomas causes irritation and ulcers that Eakin seals alleviate by stopping acidic body fluids from contacting the skin and allowing the skin to heal. Fitting an Eakin Cohesive Seal effectively is straightforward with practice by following the correct procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Using warm water and a soft cloth, wipe around the stoma site and clean the skin. Remove any trace of skin cream and grease from the skin surface over the area that the Eakin Cohesive Seal will adhere to. Dry the area of skin thoroughly with a clean towel.

    • 2

Take out a seal from the packet and hold it in between the palms of your hands to warm it up to your body temperature. It is important to warm up the seal to optimize its adhesion to the skin and also to allow easier molding. Remove the protective paper from each side of the seal.

    • 3

Using your fingers, gently pull and mold the seal to the shape of your individual stoma. Check the stoma shape and adjust the center hole in the seal to match the perimeter of the stoma. Use a small stretching motion to mold the seal with your fingertips until you achieve the right shape.

    • 4

Position the Eakin seal over the stoma so that the center hole is over the stoma opening. Mold the seal around the edge of the stoma so that the skin is completely covered and protected. Place your hand over the seal and hold it there for 20 to 30 seconds so that any stoma fluid absorbs into the seal.

    • 5

Connect the stoma pouch to the stoma and hold it against the Eakin seal for 20 to 30 seconds to absorb any leaks. Replace the seal by repeating the step procedure when the seal surface dissolves and is no longer providing a waterproof skin barrier.
