Ilium Drainage

The ilium makes up a large portion of your pelvis. When you place your fingers on your hips and press down, the bone that you feel is your ilium. Certain ailments or physical damage to the pelvis can cause an infection in the ilium.
  1. Broken Bone

    • If the ilium is fractured, there is a chance it could become infected. If this happens, and if the infection resists antibiotics, it is sometimes necessary to undergo surgery. In some cases, part of the ilium is removed, and a tube is placed into the pelvic region and grafted over to hold it in place, which allows the infection to drain from the body.

    Arthritis

    • Arthritis can cause inflammation and discomfort in joints and bones. If the pain becomes too severe in the pelvic region, it's possible that infection has set in. Often the patient will receive comfort from a lesion and drainage tube, because it's difficult to remedy bone infections with medicine alone.

    Expectations

    • Though draining the ilium should offer some relief, you may have to take time to recuperate before you notice a great difference. When a drainage tube is inserted into the pelvis, it usually causes additional discomfort until the infection heals and the drainage tube is removed.
