Gift Ideas for Your Mom in the Hospital

Whether she is recovering from a major surgery or the birth of a child, when your mother is in the hospital there are some items that are likely to bring her the most comfort possible. Just the joy of having her child's company is sure to make your mother feel better, but there are some things you can bring to help when you can't be there with her as well.

  1. Soft Clothes and Slippers

    • For her time in the hospital bed and the days following release, your mother will enjoy a soft robe, slippers and comfortable pajamas. Choose a non-frilly pajama top and bottom set, and throw in a pair of soft slippers for an added thoughtful gesture. A cozy fleece blanket is another good option.

    Books and Audiobooks

    • To keep your mother's mind occupied while her body recovers, give her a selection of reading materials or, if holding a book is too difficult, choose some audiobooks. Hundreds of books are available on disc and MP3, including new releases. For an easy read, give your mother a graphic novel or an entire comic series. Present her with a longer book that she can read during the post-hospital recovery phase.

    Movies

    • If reading is too difficult during the recovery, bring your mother a selection of movies or a TV series to watch. Public libraries generally have a selection of DVDs to choose from if your budget doesn't allow for buying these. If your mother has a long-term recovery ahead of her, you can buy her a longer-term gift with a subscription to an online movie rental company.

    Bath Items

    • While she may not be able to use them right away, bath items can be a great way to help your mother relax after a stressful surgery or recovery process. Hundreds of suppliers sell gift baskets with a variety of lotions, soaps, bubbles and other bath items. If you are creatively inclined, put together your own bath set using an interesting container or basket and a color or scent-themed selection of items. Bubble bath aromatherapy can be a great way to ease discomfort as your mother heals.

    • For an extra special day of relaxation after her hospital stay, you can buy your mother a salon gift card. She can get a massage, have a facial and experience the other luxuries of being physically pampered. If you know of any special needs your mother will have, let the employees know so they may recommend special services which will help ease her specific conditions.
