Types of Laryngoscope Blades
Laryngoscope blades are used during laryngoscopy medical surgeries and procedures. These blades are used for facilitating tracheal intubation and for procedures on the larynx and other upper tracheobronchial tree parts. Subtle differences exist between the different types of laryngoscope blades, with each of them differing slightly as far as their shapes and usage is concerned.-
Conventional Blades
-
Conventional blades are the most popular and commercially used blades. The conventional blades come in two types -- straight and curved. Curved blades are widely used, while straight blades are known more for their style. Both of these blades are available in different sizes ranging between sizes 0 and 4. The 0 is a neonatal blade, while the 4 is a large adult blade.
Fiber Optic Blades
-
Fiber Optic blades are made of stainless steel and are lightweight. Fiber optic blades can be removed and replaced. They have a very polished look and can be re-polished if needed.
Disposable Blades
-
Disposable blades are known for their strength and durability. They are made of stainless steel and have an inter-molded plastic locking mechanism. The blades will not freeze during low temperatures and their shape is optimized to ease tube passage.
Heine-Style Blades
-
Heine-Style blades are made of 303/304 surgical stainless steel. These blades have an integral fiber bundle and help in preventing cross contamination. There are four types of handles available: Medium, Penlight, Stubby and Extra Large. The bulb is in the handle of the blades and provides bright white light. These blades do not have cracks or crevices for debris accumulation and have a very long life.
