Green Laser Effects

The use of lasers in the medical field began in the 1960s and has since expanded to make routine procedures less invasive with faster healing times. Lasers prove effective in surgical, therapeutic and emergency medical care. The 532nm is the most common grade of green laser used in medical care. Each grade of laser is capable of producing a different set of effects on the body.
  1. Removes Tattoo Colors

    • Doctors use laser therapy to remove unwanted tattoos. Lasers of multiple colors are used to lighten the pigment of a tattoos ink until it is no longer visible. A 532nm is a green light laser used to remove red, orange, pink and other pastel colors from a tattoo.

    Kills Bacteria & Cauterizes Wounds

    • EMTs have started using lasers on trauma victims in emergency situations. A 532nm pocket laser in the green spectrum is more effective than red and infrared laser at eradicating bacteria in an open wound. Held over an area long enough to cause burning, medics can cauterize a bleeding wound with the laser as well.

Although lasers are not practical in most emergency situations and are less effective than traditional antiseptics, they are gaining ground with in-field medicine, when antiseptics are not readily available, and dressings as well as wounds might need to be sterilized before use.

    Reduces Acne

    • Dermatologists use 532nm green lasers, or in some cases Dual 1064nm and 532nm lasers, to perform acne reduction treatments. After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, the doctor runs a green laser over areas prone to acne outbreak. This reduces the amount of bacteria in the skin and encourages the skin's natural defenses against acne, thereby reducing the acne outbreaks. Green laser acne treatment is most effective when four or more treatments are administered over a two-week period.

    Alternative Acupuncture

    • Acupuncture is traditionally administered by inserting small needles into points on the body to relieve certain symptoms. As of 2010, green 532nm lasers focused on the acupuncture point can penetrate the location deep enough to stimulate pressure points and elicit the same physical responses without the invasive needle insertion.

    Experimental Cancer Treatment

    • Doctors are experimenting with green lasers in cancer treatment. High-power green KTP lasers provide a way to cut away the tumor, cauterize the area and radiate tissue in a single procedure. It is currently being used in prostate cancer patients, but research suggests that it might prove valuable in the treatment of other cancers as well.
