How to Use a Warm Compress After PICC Insertion
Peripherally inserted central catheters, also referred to as PICC lines, are used in patients who are involved in continuous medical treatment where fluids or medications need to be given on a regular basis. The PICC line is inserted into a vein in the arm and threaded into a larger vein above the heart. Following a PICC line insertion, the vein can become irritated. Using a warm compress on the insertion site can relieve the irritation and discomfort.Things You'll Need

1
Wet a washcloth or rag and place into a sealable bag, such as a Ziploc bag. Leave the bag open and put it in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds. Zip the bag closed after you remove it from the microwave. If you do not have a microwave, boil some water and dip the washcloth in the water. After dipping the washcloth, place it in a sealable bag and close it. Use tongs to prevent a burn.

2
Wrap the bag inside a thin rag or pillowcase. This will prevent burning of the skin. The heat from the bag will warm the cloth. The cloth should be warm to the touch, but not hot enough to burn. If too hot, allow the cloth to cool.

3
Place the warm bag in a cloth onto the PICC line insertion area. Leave on for 10 minutes. Take the bag off if it is too hot. If the bag wasn't warm enough and cooled down before the 10 minutes is up, reheat and place back on the area.

Repeat the process four times a day. Contact your doctor if you have any questions.
