Lasik Technology

Lasik technology features a special type of laser used by eye surgeons to cure optical defects such as long and short-sightedness and astigmatisms.
  1. History

    • Lasik technology dates back to 1950, when the Spanish-born ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer first developed a technique he named Keratomileusis. In 1989 an official U.S patent was granted to Dr. Gholam A. Peyman, as a "method for modifying corneal curvature".

    Procedure

    • Lasik surgery involves cutting a small flap in the surface of the eye with a laser to change the shape of the cornea bed. The painless operation is performed without local anesthetic -- it takes approximately 15 minutes for both eyes.

    Aftercare

    • Patients are required to use antibiotic eye-drops and wear sunglasses in bright light for the first couple of weeks after the operation.

    Complications

    • The most common complication is dry-eye, which can be treated with prescribed artificial tears. Other conditions include over or under-correction, light sensitivity, halos and Vitamin D deficiency.
