Burning Along the Sides of the Cervical Spine

The cervical spine starts at the base of the skull and is composed of seven cervical bones, the vertebrae, with eight pairs of cervical nerves. The cervical spine contains and protects the spinal cord, supports the skull and enables diverse head movement.
  1. Cervical Stenosis

    • Cervical stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck area. In advanced cases, nerve root and spinal cord compression can occur. One nerve root or several nerve roots may be affected.

    Symptoms

    • Without spinal cord compression, symptoms of cervical spine stenosis normally involve neck pain and symptoms resulting from nerve root compression.

    Sensory Changes

    • Sensory changes such as numbness, tingling and paresthesias in the upper extremity also occur. Paresthesias is the abnormal feeling of "burning" or "pins and needles" sensation that is felt without the need for any stimulation being applied to skin.
