1
Verify sterilization. All durable surgical forceps must undergo proper sterilization prior to patient use. You may accomplish this by checking the sterilization logs, verifying any sterilization stickers, or by verifying that the vacuum seal pack that contained the item was not damaged or opened prior to your inspection. Any item deemed not sterile following inspection must undergo the full sterilization process prior to patient use.

2
Visually inspect the forceps. Check for any debris or residue that may remain after the sterilization process. In addition, check the forceps for the presence of rust or water stains. You must consult with your section's standard operating procedure to determine a course of action to follow if stains or debris are found.

3
Check the functionality of the forceps. Place your thumb in the outer ring opening while placing two or more fingers in the inner ring opening of the forceps. Squeeze the handle to evaluate the movement of the jaws of the forceps. Movement should be even, and the jaws should open and close without hindrance or overexertion. You can also use a 2x2 gauze to evaluate the grip strength of the forceps. Squeeze the jaw end down on the gauze while attempting to pull the gauze. You should be able to pull the gauze and release it with no hindrance or difficulty. If a malfunction is noticed, then consult your section's standard operating procedure.

4
Operate the forceps. Place your thumb in the outer ring of the forceps while placing one or two fingers in the inner ring. Squeeze the forceps when placed in proper position to manipulate the affected body area. Properly functioning Hartmann alligator forceps should easily open and close when manipulated. The jaw of the forceps should remain open when not in use.

5
Properly store or dispose of used forceps. If you are using a disposable set of forceps, then you must dispose of the used forceps after each surgical use, adhering to section guidelines.Proper infection control techniques may include placing the forceps in a container designated for bio-hazard items, or disposal via sharps container or other means. Durable forceps may be properly separated and soaked to prepare for the decontamination or sterilization process.
