The Advantages of a C-Section

A Cesarean section or C-section is a process of childbirth where the doctor delivers the baby by making an incision into the abdominal wall and uterus of the mother as opposed to a vaginal delivery where the baby comes out through the birth canal. Sometimes, a C-section might become a necessity due to certain complications with a pregnancy; however, most women opt for a C-section because of some perceived advantages over vaginal delivery.
  1. Pain

    • Childbirth is a painful, messy experience which may involve long hours of contractions and pushing on the part of the mother to help the baby come out faster. Rectal or vaginal ripping, where the vagina or rectum is torn by the strain on it from the baby as it tries to make its way out, is a common occurrence. This condition is quite painful and often requires stitches to close the tear. Aside from this, a breech labor, where the baby is not positioned properly for delivery, could lead to complications with the delivery. This is an experience which some women would rather to do without and so go for a C-section, which is a pretty straightforward procedure.

    Control

    • Some women like to have control over the time of their delivery. One of the advantages of a C-section is that a day can be set aside for the delivery of the baby. One of the signs of impending labor is when the water breaks, when this happens in a public place, it can be somewhat embarrassing due to the stains from the gush of amniotic fluid, a scheduled C-section would avoid this.

    Privacy

    • Anyone who has witnessed natural childbirth knows that this is definitely not the most private experience for the mother who is placed in an exposed position with doctors and nurses constantly checking the level of dilation, a process which can go on for long hours. Some women also find the actual childbirth to be an invasion of privacy because they have to be exposed to the doctors and nurses who help deliver the baby. The time for a C-section is shorter as it is over in a matter of minutes.

    Safety of the Baby

    • Some complications with the delivery might require the obstetrician to make the decision to have an emergency C-section to save the life of the baby or mother. Such problems include when there is fetal distress or the umbilical cord has wrapped itself around the baby and is choking off the supply of oxygen.
