What Is HEMI Arthroplasty?
-
Procedure
-
In regard to a fractured hip, hemiarthroplasty involves removing the top of the femur bone and replacing it with an artificial structure made of metal or compound materials. The surgeon makes an incision into the thigh area and removes the femur head. He then shapes the tip of the femur and secures the prosthesis onto it. Once the implant is placed, the hip socket is repositioned and the incision is closed.
Exceptions
-
Because the artificial implant tends to erode or wear down over time, the surgery is generally only performed on elderly patients who have declined activity levels or a lower life expectancy.
Benefits
-
Hemiarthroplasty is easier to perform than surgeries that require replacement of the hip ball and socket. It also allows a patient to become mobile much quicker post-surgery than most other methods.
