Orthopedic Surgery of the Foot & Ankle
Orthopedic surgery of the foot and ankle can involve ligaments, tendons, muscle and bone. An orthopedic surgeon and a podiatrist are qualified to perform surgery on the foot and ankle.-
Foot Anatomy
-
The major anatomy of the foot has seven small bones under the ankle (tarsal), five bones that comprise most of the foot (metatarsals) and five toes (phalanges).
Foot Surgery
-
Foot surgery involving tendons, ligaments and muscles can include tumor removal as a result of an injury and a ligament tear. Bone surgery of the foot may involve amputation of the foot or toes. Pins, screws and plates are used in many cases to correct bone alignments.
Ankle Anatomy
-
The ankle is comprised of the joint between the two leg bones--tibia and fibula--and the talas, which is the bone underneath the ankle, soft tissue and vessels.
Ankle Surgery
-
Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which causes a compression of the nerve on the back of the ankle, can result in surgery to release the pressure. Severe fractures of the tibia or fibula can require screws and plates to be used for fixation of the bone.
Considerations
-
An orthopedic surgeon should be consulted for most foot and ankle surgeries.
