Kinds of Surgical Scissors
Operating on the human body is a precise exercise that has little to no room for error. A small slip could be the difference between life and death. As such, the tools used by surgeons need to be of superior quality. The size and shape of surgical scissors vary depending on the operation being performed.-
McClure Scissors
-
McClure scissors have an angled set of blades at the front that usually measure about an inch or less. The handles are longer and curved to fit comfortably in the hand. Because of the style of these scissors, they work well for micro-dissection. The precise fingertip control makes it easy to keep a steady hand, even when stressed and working in minuscule areas. McClures are made from fine German steel.
Iris Scissors
-
Iris scissors have slightly curved or angled, sharp blades that are 3 to 4 inches long. They generally are used for ophthalmic surgeries. The handles are circular to fit snugly around the finger and thumb, and they stem off of a central pin, where the blades pivot. For surgical purposes, the scissors are made from stainless steel.
Operating Scissors
-
These are standard surgical scissors, made of stainless steel. The sharpness of the blades is related to the procedure being performed. One of the blades is pointed and the other is wider, and the handles are circular. Dull blades are used to cut through bone and tougher tissues. Delicate cutting should be done with the sharp blades to avoid making a mistake.
