What Is Talus Fusion Surgery?

Your talus bone is an important part of your ankle joint. It transfers your weight across the joint and allows you to walk over uneven ground. If it is injured, talus fusion surgery is one treatment option.
  1. Talus

    • According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the talus is a small bone in your foot. It is found between the tibia and fibula in your leg and your heel bone.

    Reasons for Surgery

    • If your ankle joint has been damaged by an injury or by arthritis, you could experience pain when you walk and even when you are at rest. Fusion surgery can relieve the pain.

    Talus Fusion Surgery

    • In talus fusion surgery, your surgeon removes the cartilage between your tibia and talus. She replaces it with a bone graft, then connects the tibia, graft and talus with metal screws or rods. The bones will grow and fuse together.

    Recovery

    • After surgery, you will be in a cast for six weeks and must keep weight off your ankle. After an examination from your doctor, you will need to be in a cast for another six weeks and will only slowly be able to put weight on your fused ankle. Your ankle could remain swollen for up to one year, warns Georgetown University Hospital. (See GUH)

    Considerations

    • After undergoing talus fusion surgery, you will lose some of your range of motion when it comes to moving the back of your foot up and down.
