Pediatric Urologic Surgery
Pediatric urologic surgery is an option for boys and girls who have urological issues. Sometimes urologic surgery treats urinary tract problems, however, pediatric urologic surgery also can treat issues that deal with kidney problems. In some cases, the surgeries are able to treat both urologic and kidney problems at the same time.-
Types
-
There are two main types of pediatric urologic surgeries: minimally invasive surgery and reconstructive surgery. In minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon makes tiny incisions that are approximately the size of a grain of rice. The fact that the incisions are so small reduces healing time and the pain often associated with surgery. Reconstructive surgery is a more involved surgery that requires larger incisions and more complex work. This type of surgery is often performed on children who have urine that backs up into the kidney.
Benefits
-
In addition to being able to remove urine currently in the kidneys and working to make sure that urine no longer backs up into them, pediatric surgery also can help alleviate bed-wetting that occurs in children due to urological disorders.
Conditions
-
Pediatric urologic surgeries treat internal and external genitalia problems in both boys and girls, in addition to conditions that affect ureter, adrenal, urethral and bladder problems. Surgery can also treat cancers that appear along the urogenital tract.
Preparation
-
Children are not permitted to eat or drink after midnight on the day before the surgery. Surgeries are often scheduled for early in the morning because of this. The child will be given a medication after arriving at the hospital that will induce relaxation and decrease anxiety. After being moved into the operating room, the child will receive general anesthesia.
Post Surgery
-
The child will be monitored by nurses who check pulse, blood pressure, temperature and drainage from tubes. Pain medication will be administered. Children typically are able to handle foods and fluids within 4 to 48 hours after the surgery.
