What Does Anterior Hemorrhoidectomy Mean?

The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) says that the term "hemorrhoids" refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. The treatment of hemorrhoids depends on the severity of the condition.

  1. Definition

    • When excessive pressure is exerted in the anal region, a hemorrhoid may occur. Straining to eliminate stool, pregnancy or anal intercourse can all result in one or more hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can be internal---inside the anus---or external---under the skin outside the anus.

    Hemorrhoidectomy

    • The Mayo Clinic says that a hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove extensive or severe internal or external hemorrhoids.

    Anterior Hemorrhoidectomy

    • The Merck Manuals Online Medical Library says that hemorrhoids typically occur in the right anterior, right posterior and left lateral zones. Anterior refers to to front, or uppermost portion of the body as the patient is laying flat. Posterior is the rear position, closer to the backbone. Lateral refers to the sides of the body.

    Occurance

    • The Merck Manuals says that a hemorrhoidectomy is used when hemorrhoids do not respond to other forms of therapy. Anterior hemorrhoids usually require surgical removal.

    Problems

    • Constipation, urinary retention and post-operative pain are all common after an anterior hemorrhoidectomy.
