Abdominal Binder Application Procedures
An abdominal binder is a large, stretchy fabric binder that is used to provide evenly distributed support and compression after an abdominal surgery. Abdominal binders are commonly used after cesarean sections, hysterectomies, liposuction and any other procedure that involves incisions in the abdomen. When worn properly, abdominal binders can provide a lot of comfort and support to a recovering patient.-
Application Procedures
-
Position the opened binder underneath the patient, and stretch out one end to expand the length of the material. Stretch that end over the patient's stomach, and hold it in place using one hand. Use your other hand to grasp the other end of the binder, position it at the desired angle and press it onto the other end of the binder. If applied properly, the binder will provide a secure fit, with compression and pressure that actually encourages the patient to breathe deeply.
An abdominal binder can also be self-applied. Stand in an upright position, and stretch out the abdominal binder behind you, keeping the top edge of it just below your navel. Wrap one end around, and then the other. Press down firmly to secure the abdominal binder in place.
If you require drainage tubes, the abdominal binder can be snipped using an elliptical cut-out to provide the drain an exit point. Measure your cut so that its length is equivalent to the needed diameter of the hole.
Cleaning Instructions
-
Secure the Velcro surfaces of the abdominal binder to prevent lint accumulation or pulling during washing. Hand wash or machine wash in cold water, and do not use bleach. Lay flat or hang to dry.
