Reasons for Gallbladder Surgery

Gallbladder surgery is usually performed to clear the gallbladder of small stones. Many people have gallstones and don't have any symptoms. However, if gallstones block the ducts connecting the gallbladder to other internal organs, intense pain and other symptoms result.

    • Intense abdominal pain is the most common gallstone symptom. Nausea and vomiting can also occur. Internal complications of gallstones include inflammation of the liver and pancreas.

    Causes of Gallbladder Problems

    • Gallbladder problems are most often caused by gallstones blocking the bile ducts. Gallstones are composed primarily of bile salts and cholesterol. The gallbladder may also develop polyps or tumors.

    • Doctors use X-rays and ultrasound tests to diagnose gallbladder problems before contemplating gallbladder surgery.

    Gallstone Treatment

    • Once a gallstone forms it generally will not dissolve or go away on its own. Symptoms can be managed with diet and medication but surgery may be required to eliminate them.

    Gallbladder Surgery

    • Cholecystectomy, a surgery to remove the gallbladder, is the most common treatment for acute gallbladder problems. Currently the procedure is most often performed through a small incision and is referred to as laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
