How to Eat Following a Partial Laryngectomy
A partial laryngectomy, a process in which a portion of the larynx is removed, is usually performed to remove a cancerous lesion. This procedure calls for careful post-surgical care, including a healthy and balanced diet. A partial laryngectomy is not as severe as a total removal of the larynx--you likely will regain your ability to breathe normally--but a careful diet is still necessary as you recover from cancer of the larynx.Instructions

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. This simple step will boost your energy and general health, helping you overcome the uncomfortable and sometimes painful aftereffects of surgery. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Replace white flour and bread with whole grains. Decrease your intake of fatty foods and red meats. These heart-healthy choices will improve your health and help you ensure a full recovery from your laryngectomy.

Be patient if you have lost your ability to taste, as this usually returns with time. Many patients who have undergone a partial laryngectomy and chemotherapy are frustrated with their inability to taste their favorite foods. Don't worry--as the side effects of your therapy fade, your taste will gradually return.

Eat small meals frequently throughout the day. As your body is still recovering from the treatment, you should avoid large meals that place a burden on your digestive system. During your meals, eat small bites and chew very thoroughly; your neck may still be sore and unable to swallow large chunks of food. If solid foods are causing you pain, talk to your doctor or nutritionist about high-nutrient shakes you can take until you are ready to resume a normal diet.
