    • 1

Contact your physician immediately. If you think that you have seriously injured your hamstring, have a trained physician diagnose the tear and suggest proper treatment. If the tear is complete, the injury requires surgery.

    • 2

Make an incision over the pelvis. The surgeon will make a skilled cut over the pelvis where the tendon should attach to the bone.

    • 3

Locate the tendon. The surgeon will use forceps to grasp the torn hamstring tendon and pull it back to its proper location.

    • 4

Clean the scar tissue. The surgeon cleans any scar tissue from the site of the injury and prepares to reattach the tendon or muscle.

    • 5

Attach the hamstring to the pelvic bone. The surgeon can either suture the tendon to the bone or use large staples to re-attach the tendon. Either method is effective and used frequently.

    • 6

Close and clean the incision. The surgeon will stitch or staple the incision closed and then clean, bandage and disinfect the area.

    • 7

Perform rehabilitation. A physical therapist will guide you through proper and efficient methods to rebuild the hamstring. Performance of frequent strengthening exercises and patience are absolutely necessary to fully regain mobility and strength.
