Exercises for Neck Surgery Patients

The goals of rehabilitation after surgery are twofold. First, the patient should perform flexibility training to restore proper range of motion in the affected area. Second, the patient should perform strengthening exercises to decrease the probability of a recurring injury. Whether you have had neck surgery due to an injury or some other means, assiduously follow your rehabilitation program to expedite your recovery.
  1. Flexibility Training

    • Perform neck flexibility training to restore proper range of motion to the neck after removal of the brace. According to the University of Iowa Hospital System, perform neck flexibility training daily during the recovery period. Begin by performing simple neck stretches. Sit in a comfortable, natural position (with your chin tucked in and your ears directly over the shoulders). Initiate the movement by bending forward at the neck so that your chin is in contact with your chest. Hold this for five full seconds. From there, turn your head to the left as far as you can without discomfort. Hold this position for five full seconds. From there, return your head to a neutral position, then tilt it to the side so that your ear is touching your shoulder. Hold here for a final five seconds. Repeat this two more times (for a total of three sets), then reverse and repeat all of the drills to the right as well.

    Strength Training

    • Perform strength training for your neck to increase the area's resistance to further injury. While sitting in a comfortable position looking forward with your chin tucked and your ears above your shoulders, place your left hand lightly on the left side of your head and press lightly against the side of your head. Resist the force with the muscles of your neck, keeping your head in place. Maintain the resistance for 5 to 10 seconds before reversing, repeating the drill with your right hand on the right side of your head. After performing on both sides, repeat the drill to the front and back as well, using both hands on your forehead and the back of your skull to provide further resistance. Go through the entire drill three or four times per training session, gradually increasing the amount of pressure you provide with your hands as your neck strength builds.
