How to Prepare for Surgery to Remove a Section of Colon
Partial colon resections, in which a section of the colon is removed from the body, may help you overcome colon cancer, severe ulcerative colitis or other intestinal diseases. This surgery has become very common and can usually be done laparoscopically, through a tiny incision and using a small camera. In order to ensure a safe and proper operation, you must take several steps to prepare for your partial colon resection.Instructions

1
Go to your general practitioner and receive a medical checkup. It's essential that your surgeon understand your entire medical history and current state of health. Any potentially complicating factors must be understood and taken into account before the operation.
-
2
Stop smoking as soon as possible. Cigarettes weaken your immune system, impede the healing process and increase the risk of surgical complications. Quitting smoking is great for your general health and especially important prior to surgery.

3
Do not eat any solid foods the day before surgery. This is often the most challenging step for patients, but it is essential for a safe colectomy.
-
4
Only drink clear, translucent liquids the day before surgery. These include water, light tea and gelatin.
-
5
Prepare your bowels for surgery. The purpose of bowel prep is to eliminate as much as possible from the inside of the colon, often using laxatives or other medication.
-
6
Do not drink anything, including water, beginning at midnight before your surgery. Having a clean, dry colon facilitates a smooth operation and a quick post-surgical recovery.
