Dangers of Gallbladder Surgery
If your gallbladder becomes infected, your doctor may recommend that it be removed. As with any surgery, there are some dangers and complications that could occur because of gallbladder surgery.-
Function
-
The gallbladder collects and concentrates bile, a digestive aid, that is produced by the liver.
Problems
-
Gallbladder problems are caused by gallstones. Gallstones can block the flow of bile from the gallbladder and cause the gallbladder to swell.
Solution
-
Doctors treat gallbladder problems by removing the gallbladder. The gallbladder is removed either through a five- to seven- inch incision, or laparoscopically, which requires only four small cuts.
Surgery Dangers
-
According to Dr. David Flum, laparoscopic surgery can be dangerous because there is a chance the bile duct could be damaged. There is also a possibility of danger or death due to the anesthesia used, which is a risk in all surgeries.
Complications After Surgery
-
Complications patients could experience after surgery include bleeding, infection, heart problems or pneumonia.
