How to Live With a Urostomy
A urostomy is an opening in the abdomen created during in surgeries when the bladder needs to be removed or urine re-routed. A cystectomy is the surgery used to remove the bladder entirely. While it does take time, urostomy patients are able to completely return to normal life and can still enjoy activities such as socializing, sports and even intercourse.Things You'll Need

1
Allow for some time to pass before resuming normal life. Once the urostomy has properly healed and the wearer is comfortable with the bag, public life can be resumed.
-
2
Find a good pouching system. Good pouching systems should be secure with a seal that lasts at least 5 days, able to protect the skin around the stoma, invisible when covered with clothing and easy to use. Pouch systems are always being improved to become more comfortable and convenient for wearers, so it is an excellent idea to remain apprised of the latest technology.

3
Begin slowly when entering new social situations. Consider an initial errand of no more than a couple of hours and something close to home should something unexpected happen. It is normal to feel self conscious about the urostomy initially, but keep in mind that the pouch is completely invisible and undetectable under clothing.
-
4
Tell only those who are deemed necessary about the stoma and keep in mind that only minimal information need be given. Explanations such as, "I've had abdominal surgery" or "I've had my bladder removed" is all that is necessary.
-
5
When returning to work a doctor's note detailing the procedure and possible restrictions is essential. While there are firefighters, construction workers and even athletes with stomas, it is important to make a supervisor aware of the stoma should an emergency arise.
-
6
Approach intimacy with patience and a good sense of humor. It can be difficult initially, but will get easier as time progresses. Bodily contact will not loosen the pouch, but sometimes an added layer can add some added confidence. For women, and nightie or "teddy" can be worn to offer a covering for the pouch. Men can wear a cummerbund to add some additional support.
