Recovery From a Laminectomy
A laminectomy is a surgical procedure that removes a portion of bone from vertebrae on the spine. This bone, called lamina, presses on the spinal cord and nerves, causing pain, numbness or tingling in your limbs. Physical therapy will help you regain movement and function in the weeks following the surgery. After about six weeks you should have no problem sitting for long periods of time, driving and doing most household chores. With no complications, the healing process will take about two months.-
The First Week
-
Most patients remain in the hospital for two or three days following a laminectomy, according to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Most people begin walking 24 hours after surgery with assistance from a physical therapist. If you experience persistent weakness following surgery, physical therapy can help to strengthen and restore movement in your neck and back. You can reduce muscle spasms with stretches and gentle weight-bearing exercises.
Medication
-
To access the spine during surgery, the doctor will need to move the muscles out of the way. As a result, patients can expect varying degrees of discomfort in the first few weeks after surgery. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or NSAIDs (Advil or Aleve) help reduce pain and swelling, as can heat compresses and shifting position. For moderate to severe pain, your doctor may prescribe a stronger painkiller.
Post-Operative Expectations
-
Patients should take three to six weeks off from work, as sitting for long periods of time can exacerbate pain and stiffness. Weakness typically persists for several weeks following surgery. Most people gradually resume daily activities after a couple of weeks, but may continue to have difficulty moving their back and neck. Putting on shoes and socks, getting out of bed and chores that require a lot of bending, like lifting a laundry basket and emptying a dryer, could be difficult until the soreness from surgery dissipates. As soon as your doctor approves, start walking daily to increase your strength and stamina.
