The History of Butt Augmentation
In recent years, people have had buttock augmentation surgeries to mimic the posteriors of such celebrities as Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles. The first procedure of its kind dates back to 1969. Along the way there have been several modifications to the procedure, but the goal has been the same: To alter the appearance of the buttocks to make them more shapely and attractive.-
Subcutaneous Implants
-
In 1969, Dr. RJ Bartels and his associates performed the first buttock augmentation surgery. Rounded breast implants were placed subcutaneously, or beneath the skin. The overall results were not positive because of the unnatural appearance. A year later, Dr. Mario Gonzalez-Ulloa used an updated almond-shaped implant and a new method to implant them. Again, the results were negative because the implants could be easily detected. Some problems with the procedure included the difficulty in creating symmetry, how easily the implants could be displaced, infection and general discomfort.
Sub-Muscular Implants
-
In 1984, Dr. Jose Robles developed a new type of implant that was placed between the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medium muscles. This design eliminated all signs of visible detection and capsular contraction, which is an abnormal response of a person's immune system toward a foreign object. The procedure was difficult, which kept it from being used widely, though it did help maintain interest in buttock augmentation.
Intramuscular Implants
-
In the early 1990s, South American and Mexican surgeons used a modified method of Dr. Robles' implant surgery. In 1996, Dr. Rafael Vergara published an article discussing the benefits of placing implants within the muscle. The article did not give particular instructions on how to perform the surgery. In 2004, Dr. Raul Gonzalez published a report of a new intramuscular technique.
Subfascial Implants
-
Dr. José de La Peña designed a procedure using textured implants at the subfascial location, or above the muscle. It is easily performed and requires little practice for a surgeon to become comfortable with performing the procedure. An advantage is that the implants are well hidden. Two disadvantages are that the constant pressure and added weight on the tissues from the implants may bring the whole buttock downward, and there is the possibility for fluid retention.
Natural Fat Injection
-
Nowadays, some patients choose to use natural fat injections to augment their buttocks instead of implants. Fat injection is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time. The main disadvantage to using fat injection is that it takes multiple sessions to create the same look as one would get with implants.
