How to Fast Before Surgery

If you need to get some surgery done then your doctor has asked you to fast before going under the knife. It's a good idea to follow the fasting program because anesthesia can cause some people to get sick, and throwing up in recovery is no fun for the hospital staff or you. Here's how to fast before surgery to help you have a successful outcome in the recovery room.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask how long you need to fast prior to surgery. Some surgeries only require an 8-hour fast, but others may require a 12-hour or longer fast. Be sure to get specific instructions on your fasting program well ahead of your scheduled surgery date.

    • 2

Eat a light meal just prior to starting your fasting program. As strange as it may seem, going easy on your digestive system with a light meal is the best way for you to make it through recovery without getting sick.

    • 3

Drink water or eat ice chips if you are allowed to do so. Before some surgeries you are permitted to suck on ice chips to keep your mouth moist.

    • 4

Make sure your doctor knows what medicines you take and when you take them. You may have to temporarily stop your medications during the fasting program, but then again you may be required to take your medications even during your fast. Make sure you ask your doctor which medications you should take and which ones you need to discontinue during the fast and through recovery.

Keep the menu light after surgery as well. Most doctors keep you on a liquid diet at least for the first post-operative meal. This is so you and your stomach have a chance to recover.
